"I am passionate about Britain" says Ed Milliband

The new leader of the Labour Party, Ed Miliband has given a doorstep interview to the BBC'sNick Robinson. He said when asked what does he want the general public to know about him, was that he is passionate about Britain, passionate about what our country can be and passionate about dealing with the injustices he sees.

On his defeated older brother, he said it is for David to set out his own intentions on what he wants to do although he added their relationship excellent and they are united as well the party.

This is Ed's day! - says David Milliband

David Milliband has just given a doorstep interview to the BBC's Nick Robinson outside his hotel. He said this is his brother's day and will not talk about his own future. He said he was genuinely delighted that Ed is the new leader and he will give him his full support.

Incidentally he was greeted by a standing ovation when he arrived back at his hotel, and he one of the top trending topics on twitter, but the new leader, Ed is not.

19:07 BREAKING NEWS: David Milliband has just released his first thoughts on his twitter account. He said he was moved and honoured of the support he received from labour members. He also said he was really proud of his campaign. He added he was passionate that Ed now has a united party behind him.

Ladbrokes : Ed Miliband's election increases the chances of the Tories winning the next election

The betting agency, Ladbrokes are briefing that Ed Milliband victory in the leadership contest increases the chances of a labour defeat at the next election. According to them Labour are now 13/8 to beat the Conservatives, compared to 6/4 prior to the leadership election result. The news will worry many in the party, which elected the former energy secretary as its leader, despite his older brother David being the front runner throughout the contest. The Conservative Party are now 4/9 from 1/2 to gain most seats at the next election.

The new leader, Ed Milliband has quickly spoken to the BBC's Laura Kuennsberg, he says he can unite the party despite his narrow victory.

New Labour Leader's Speech

In his first speech as the new Labour Leader, Ed Milliband told his party that it needs to change. In a short speech celebrating his victory, he said that he represented "a new generation" in politics. Labour had to recognise that it lost the election badly. Voters thought the government was not addressing their concerns. "I get it," he said.
He added he understands people's concerns about immigration, about housing, about university education, and about Iraq. "I know that we have to change."

He says government does have to do something about the deficit. But it has to inspire people with a vision of a good society. Society must be more equal, he says.

Britain also needs a new type of politics. He will support the coalition when it is doing the right thing, and oppose it when it is doing the wrong thing.

Labour lost the election badly, he says. The party has to change. He "gets it". A new generation has taken over.

16:20 BREAKING NEWS: The former Prime Minster and former Labour Leader is making his farewell speech now. He says he and his wife Sarah are part of the Labour family and always will be. He says he wants to say two small words - thank you. To Harriet Harman, his deputy and the current acting leader, to all present and past MPs, and to all the councillors, constituents and trade unionists "who live our Labour values every day".

In his speech He thanked the press for its "fair and balanced reporting of him" - the Fife Free Press, he said, after a pause. And he had a joke about Tony Blair too. He said he received an offer from someone who required a reference from his previous employer. But he did not realise Blair's reference was going to weigh in at 700 pages.

He said Labour is the only progressive party in the UK. And he takes "full responsibility" for the election. Labour must not get into the blame game. Whoever wins the leadership election, they will have Brown's "full, unequivocal" support. In future, Brown will not do anything other than support the Labour team.

Labour awaits leadership results

Only 40mins left until the new leader of the labour party is announced. The conference hall is tense, with the campaign teams seated together in rows. Before the announcement I'm told the former PM Gordon Brown will give a speech as well and the announcement will be made by the Labour Party General Secretary Ray Collins.

Ed Balls's supporters playing down a surprise victory

Ed Balls's campaign manager Lord Knight has said it would be a big surprise if his man won today. "I think David will just edge it. While I'm happy with either of the brothers winning, I think Ed's camp have been talking up second preferences a bit more than I think the reality is, from the canvassing I've done."

And Charlie Whelan, Gordon Brown's former spin doctor and a close ally of Ed Balls, says he's always thought Ed Miliband had "something about him". He goes on: "Ed's not seen as a part of Gordon Brown or Tony Blair. He is his own man."

Sadly, i do agree with them that Ed Balls, has not won the leadership, although i do agree with the universal agreement that he has run the best campaign of the leadership contest.

He says he's confident about his campaign, but doesn't know what the outcome is. Sky's Jon Craig told him he was the bookies' favourite. Miliband said that, having told everyone throughout the campaign to ignore the bookies he was not going to start telling people to believe them now.

He said to Sky News he is quietly confident of a good result for him, he also said he has not told his supporters cast second preference votes to a specific candidate. She said a few words to the BBC's Laura Kuennssberg, refusing to say who she voted for in the contest. Earlier she did confirm she did not vote for any candidate because of her role as the permanent deputy leader of the party, thus having work with any leader that is elected.

Ed Milliband the new faviourate to win!

For the first time since the contest began, Ed Miliband is favourite with bookmaker Coral to become the new leader of the Labour party. The younger Miliband is now the odds-on 8-11 favourite to replace Gordon Brown, with brother David out to evens.

"With voting now closed, this is a significant change in the odds, and it's bad news for David Miliband supporters, with their man displaced as favourite at the crucial time," said Coral's David Stevens. "If the money talks, then Ed Miliband will be the new leader of the Labour party," added Stevens.

A Populus poll for The Times claims Labour voters prefer Gordon Brown to David and Ed Miliband. Asked to give a number of politicians a score out of 100, participants gave Brown 58, whilst the Miliband brothers both scored 54.

Sky News : David Milliband has won the PLP vote

20:00 BREAKING NEWS: SKY News are reporting that the former foreign secretary, David Miliband has secured the most votes from MPs in the Labour leadership contest. Sky News Political Correspand has said one MP claimed David had the support of 14 more PLP members than younger brother Ed.

Harriet Harman attacked the Budget that does nothing for growth - the most pain-free way out of debt. But she is also hammered the Lib Dems for doing things which they had campaigned against.

She said that, although it's Osborne's first budget, it's the same old Tory policies.

She said growth for 2011 has been revised downwards from 2.6% to 2.3%. And the OBR are predicting that unemployment will rise. It's equivalent to putting every man and woman in Coventry out of work, she says.
